Eat Local KC is proud to announce the 2007 Season Eat Local Kansas City Challenge. This event is a joint effort between The Eat Local Challenge (www.eatlocalchallenge.com) and our local Kansas City Food Circle’s (www.kcfoodcircle.org) 100-Mile Diet group.
If you would like to participate, it’s as easy as adding local foods into your diet; shopping farmers’ markets, buying local products at your normal grocery store; joining a CSA; planting a garden; anything that adds local foods to your diet.
The Eat Local Challenge is about making conscious choices in your diet and knowing that these choices impact your community and the environment as a whole. Each person who undertakes the challenge designs his or her set of rules, with the primary common thread being to source as much as possible locally, preferably within a 100-mile radius of your home.
There may be many things you cannot or will not give up. These could be things like coffee, chocolate, spices, tea, and salt. For these items, you can apply the locavore pledge:
If not LOCALLY PRODUCED, then Organic.
If not ORGANIC, then Family farm.
If not FAMILY FARM, then Local business.
If not a LOCAL BUSINESS, then Fair Trade.
Several Kansas City locals have signed up to take the challenge and write about their experiences on this site. The authors include folks like farmers, a dietician, writers, and consumers like you and I. Throughout the growing season for 2007 (April through October), these authors will post information on their Eat Local KC Challenge here. Look for their stories, recipes, resources and all things about eating local in our great city.
Ready to start? Farmers’ Markets are opening soon! The spring growing season has begun and local foods are all around us. Leave us a comment and let us know how you plan on challenging yourself this summer in Kansas City!
Want to be an author? Leave us a comment and let us know who you are, how you define the challenge, and give us a link to your writing. We’d love to hear from you!
Who is organizing the KC challenge and how do I get in touch with them?
