What Kansas Senator Roberts has to say on Subsidies

If you ask Senator Roberts of Kansas who he thinks deserves those fat subsidy payments, this is his answer:

We need to support the farmers that produce the food and fiber of this country. The Washington Post series has talked a lot about 5 foot 3 inch hobby farmers from Vermont. In Kansas, we have 6 foot 2 inch farmers with 10,000 acres who are actually producing the food and fiber for this country and the world, and we need to support production agriculture."

Great, Mr. Roberts. I'll be sure to share your thoughts with the family farmers from my CSA and farmers markets so they know how to vote as well.

Farm Bill News Items

The Farm Bill hits the Senate floor this week. This is the last chance we will have to try and get Congress to repair this bill. The Senate version throws a few bones by way of conservation, school food, farmers markets and food stamp programs, but there are still major issues to be addressed.

Michael Pollan does a good summary of the key issue, but if you want the details between what the House proposed and what Senate is looking at, check it out here. Be sure to modify the letter to encourage Senators to put a $250K cap on subsidy payments or adopt the Fresh Act.
